Mary was devoted to learning, understanding, and appreciating history, government, and economics, she felt strongly that an MND education was something of value. She felt that the opportunity to exercise the opportunities that education provides should not be prevented because of financial circumstances. Thus, during her lifetime career at MND, she made certain that if a student was unable to participate in a field trip, etc. she quietly made certain that the student would be able to do so. Thus, her final gift to MND was to ensure that students who were hardworking and appreciated the opportunities that an MND education provided, would have that ability. Mary was devoted to her students; provided support and guidance to her colleagues; and lived out her deeply held Catholic faith. The Mary Mehmert Memorial Scholarship serves as a wonderful memorial to all that Mary believed, taught, and lived. – submitted by Sue Herdeman Magnus ’69 and Catherine Schildknecht
