Mount Notre Dame is proud to announce that Spanish teacher, Ms. Anita Lukey, has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Summer Program. The Fulbright Program offers international educational and cultural exchange programs for passionate and accomplished students, scholars, artists, teachers and professionals of all backgrounds to study, teach or pursue important research and professional projects.
Ms. Lukey will travel to Cali, Colombia where she will attend classes and seminars at Javieriana, a Jesuit university in Cali. She will visit several schools to observe different teaching methodologies and work with another educator to form student connections between MND and local Cali students. She plans on incorporating many new ideas into her classroom next year.
“I have been meeting with a cooperating educator in Cali, Colombia, the past couple of months and have shared insights about education and pedagogy, language, technology, social justice, and daily life,” expressed Ms. Lukey. “I am excited to meet her in a couple of weeks and observe her school.”
Selection for the program includes a very rigorous application process. Teachers must submit letters of recommendation, a small write-up about their experiences with the Spanish language, their educational experience and involvement with social justice. Ms. Lukey volunteers with The Healing Center in Cincinnati, a non-profit where she helps with hospitality for many Spanish- speaking guests. She is also a medical interpreter and has served throughout the years with the Hispanic community.
